Danvers: Well-wishers held a reception yesterday at the Danversport Yacht Club for former fire Chief James Tutko, 61, who retired this year. The town's fourth fire chief, the life-long Danvers native served 18 years in the post, beginning his career as a firefighter in 1971. Tutko made sure firefighters had proper training. The department won widespread praise for its handling of the 2006 Danversport Chemical Plant explosion. The department earned a Special Fire Marshal's Award during the Firefighter of the Year Awards ceremony in Boston in 2007. Senior leaders, including Tutko, earned the fire marshal's first Excellence in Leadership award.
Yesterday, in a low-key reception, dozens showed up to hear presentations from Town Manager Wayne Marquis and the President of Fire Chiefs Association of Massachusetts, Marshfield Fire Chief Kevin Robinson. A citation from state Sen. Fred Berry, D-Peabody, was also presented. photo by Mark Teiwes / Salem News
