Maestro Dirk Hillyer invited four-year-old Laila Whitcomb, of Salem, on stage to help conduct the Hillyer Festival Orchestra. Salem celebrated Independence Day with festivities and fireworks at the Salem Maritime National Historic Site on Derby Wharf.
